Abstract

Currently, in utility tunnels in China, the gas pipelines were installed under an isolated compartment, which meant the cost of installation and maintenance is high, and the novel design of the water–gas compartment was proposed to lay water pipeline and gas pipeline. The possible explosive accidents were obtained by simulation software FLACS, including shock wave and flame damage. The results show that the shape of vapor cloud influences the explosive intensity more than fuel mass, and the maximum overpressure shows at the fire-proof partition rather than the explosive center. The shock wave will hurt people and the flame will influence the adjacent compartment. Pressure-relief panels and fine water mist were examined to compare the protective effects, and the pressure-relief panels are more effective. The results are helpful in evaluating future water–gas compartment design and related explosive prevention measures, also instructive in escaping for personnel in utility tunnels.
