Abstract

Residual stresses and associated distortions are the major causes of inaccuracy and deterioration of yield strength and fatigue life in welded structure. Because of limitations with NDT techniques numerical solutions have potential role in prediction of residual stress and associated distortions. This paper presents a finite element model developed using ANSYS to predict the thermal stress distribution during spot welding of low carbon steel plate. An experiment is conducted to determine weld pool shape and observed shape were compared with predicted weld pool shape using ANSYS model. The effect of residual stress on thickness of plate is also presented.
