Abstract

The nonlinear optical effects in frequency-modulation mode-locked semiconductor laser diodes have been examined. The numerical simulation carried out in the frequency domain showed that the asymmetric nonlinear optical gain, which causes mode instability in mode-locked lasers, can be compensated for by an additional phase modulator. The stabilization of multimode oscillation was experimentally confirmed by applying phase modulation to the grating coupled laser diode.
