Abstract

The numerical models of continuous groove textures with the characteristics of “X”-shaped units have been established. The effect of geometric parameters and sliding speed on tribological properties were systematically investigated. The optimal geometric parameters of each texture shape were determined. It is found that the circular texture shows the best lubrication performance at lower area densities. When the area density exceeds 25%, the square texture with the orientation of θ = 90° exhibits better tribological performance than the circular texture by increasing the groove depth. The lubrication mechanism is explained by the trade-off between the fluid flow and the generation of hydrodynamic pressure.
