Abstract

A scenario for the production of a current sheet above an active region during the emergence of new magnetic flux is considered. The formation of a current sheet is demonstrated via a numerical solution of a system of MHD equations with dissipative terms. The flare energy is stored in the magnetic field of the current sheet. The decay of the current sheet can account for a number of solar-flare phenomena, including the observed divergence of Hα ribbons.
