Abstract

In this paper, a procedure for the simulation of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images from a moving ship over a random sea surface is studied. In the simulation, the time-varying characteristic of the sea surface and the generated wake by the ship is taken into consideration, as well as the motion of the ship. Then SAR echoes under different parameters are simulated according to the electromagnetic (EM) scattering model, based on which SAR images is able to be obtained. From the simulated results, one can see the similar features caused by ship's motion in real SAR images. That is to say the simulated SAR images are able to reveal the motion features of the ship on account of considering the dynamic change of the composite scene, and the effectiveness of the simulation approach is verified as well.
