Abstract

In this work, optical propagation in human head is modeled by the Monte Carlo method in combination with a realistic high-resolution three-dimensional adult human head mesh which discriminates different brain layers. The method is applied to the analysis of optical radiation distribution in the brain using different types of sources. The results show the high spatial selectivity that can be achieved by optically irradiating human head, which entails a high potential for illuminating specific brain regions. The presented approach can be applied for predictive purposes in the emerging field of optical brain stimulation.KeywordsOptical propagationbiological tissueshuman brainMonte Carlolaser sources
