Abstract

AbstractIn the present work, numerical simulations are carried out to investigate the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of a triple pipe heat exchanger with helical fins and twisted tape inserts. The effect of the mass flow rate of cold fluid, hot fluid, fin and twisted tape configurations are studied. Helical fins and twisted tape inserts provide heat transfer enhancement with an increase in pressure drop. It was found that based on the study, six helical fins and a twisted tape ratio of 9.75 were found to perform better for the conditions considered. The pumping power requirement seems very less for both hot and cold fluids ranging to be between 1 to 15 W depending on the flow rate of fluids.KeywordsTriple pipe heat exchangerHelical finsTwisted tapeHeat transferPressure drop
