Abstract

Numeracy is the use of mathematics in life contexts. Earlier in the book we were looking at learning mathematics in school. Maths is a rich and beautiful subject, worthy of study in its own right! (You can tell I’m a maths teacher.) While we can argue for studying mathematics in its own right, it is also an important subject to study to be able to make use of it in life contexts, whatever they may be. We cannot be numerate without knowing and being able to use mathematics in context. However, what mathematics is required? How do we teach how to use maths in life contexts? This chapter addresses that issue.
