Abstract

The first investigation of nucleophilic addition of glycine esters to Gd@C 82 is reported and hydroxyl was found to compete with glycine esters in the reaction. The multiple adducts containing either mere glycine esters or both glycine esters and hydroxyl group were identified by MALDI TOF mass spectrometry and characterized with UV–Vis–NIR spectrometry. Because glycine ethyl ester is more soluble than glycine methyl ester in alcohol and toluene, as many as eight glycine ethyl ester groups can be added to the metallofullerene cage while the maximal number for glycine methyl ester groups is only four.
