Abstract

ABSTRACT The present paper reports the experimental investigation of nucleate pool boiling heat transfer above heating surface with the creation of new geometric micro-cavities. Cylindrical, cubic, and pentagonal micro-cavities created on heating surface were studied. Micro-cavity surfaces were fabricated using a fiber laser machine. The heat transfer coefficient (HTC) of the heating surfaces were estimated experimentally by using pure water and water–Al2O3 nanofluid. The results showed that by creating geometrical micro-cavity on the heating surface, a maximum improvement of 83%–123.4% was obtained when using pure water. At a concentration of 0.005 vol.% nanofluid, the HTC increased by 95.2%–140.5% for different micro-cavities.
