Abstract

As a result of the outstandingly good historic performance of Finnish nuclear power plants (NPPs) together with the predicted increase in electricity demand by 2010, there is potential interest in building a fifth unit at one of the existing Finnish nuclear sites. In this paper, firstly a financial comparison of the new baseload power plant alternatives in the Finnish circumstances has been carried out, and secondly the actual power production costs of the existing Olkiluoto NPP have been calculated, based on operating costs of about 20 years. The conclusions of the study show that the nuclear option has many strong advantages.
