Abstract
The news item which has probably caused the greatest excitement among physicists this year is a communication published by E Fischbach et al in Physical Review Letters (6 January 1986). It presents significant evidence for something which has been suspected for a few years: one of the most cherished laws of nature, Newton's law of gravitation, is only approximately true!
