Abstract

The quadrupole interactions in a number of solids have been investigated to determine the existence of nuclear electric hexadecapole interactions (HDI). The HDI would manifest itself as a perturbation of the quadrupolar energy levels. The following isotopes in the following compounds have been investigated: 185Re and 187Re in NH 4ReO 4, and ND 4ReO 4, 187Re in KReO 4, 127I in NaIO 4, 209Bi in BiOCl and BiCl 3, 93Nb in NbF 5, and NbCl 5,and 121Sb and 123Sb in SbCl 3. The internal consistency of the data is such that it is concluded that no measurable hexadecapole interactions exist in the materials studied.
