Abstract

The quadrupole interactions in a number of solids have been investigated to determine the existence of nuclear electric hexadecapole interactions (HDI). The HDI would manifest itself as a perturbation of the quadrupolar energy levels. The following isotopes in the following compounds have been investigated: 185Re and 187Re in NH4ReO4 and ND4ReO4, 187Re in KReO4, 127I in NaIO4, 209Bi in BiOCl and BiCl3, 93Nb in NbF5 and NbCl5, and 121Sb and 123Sb in SbCl3. The internal consistency of the data is such that it is concluded that no measurable hexadecapole interactions exist in the materials studied.
