Abstract

The nuclear dry mass and area of epidermal cells of senescing soybean cotyledons were measured with an interference microscope and found to decrease until cotyledon abscission. Decapitation after germination prevented yellowing and abscission of cotyledons and the decrease of both nuclear dry mass and area. The means of nuclear dry mass and area for normal and decapitated cotyledons were highly correlated in two experiments, r = 0-76 and 0-90 respectively.
