Abstract
To the Editor.— Your issue of Aug 1, 1986, contained several news items and special communications as well as editorial comment on the fallout of the Chernobyl disaster. It was quite informative except for the absence of a contribution from that segment of medicine associated with the nuclear utility industry, the physicians most intimately in contact with the greatest number of potential casualties (nuclear utility plant workers). Following the Three Mile Island incident in 1979, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued regulations designed to cope with similar potential accidents. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission's regulatory guide (regulation 0654) specifically mandates preparations, by the utility, to use local off-site facilities for medical treatment of radiation-contaminated injured individuals. In 1980, nuclear utilities were directed to provide training and drills to community medical support personnel on an annual basis.
