Abstract
Nuclear physicists across Europe have reacted with astonishment and, in many cases, outrage at the sudden proposal that the Nuclear Structure Facility (NSF) at the UK Science and Engineering Research Council's Daresbury Laboratory should be closed and that nuclear structure support in the UK should be drastically reduced within a few years. Though some scientists in other disciplines see such an action as almost inevitable in the current economic climate, the nuclear physicists are particularly concerned that the implications of such a decision have not been adequately considered.
