Abstract

Three major physics programmes have been included in a hit-list for possible closure as part of a “flexibility” exercise which is setting priorities for the UK's science budget. At risk are: UK participation in the European Space Agency's X-ray Multi-Mirror (XMM) mission; the Vulcan laser at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Europe's biggest laser for civilian applications; and the nuclear structure programme. Nuclear physicists in the UK are currently coming to terms with life without the Nuclear Structure Facility, which closes this month (see p63).
