Abstract

Galvanization is a method to coat metals using zinc layer. It generates galvanization ash and dust as the byproducts. Until now, the galvanization ash has not been widely explored and used. This study focuses on the synthesis of zinc oxide nanostructure (n-ZnO) from zinc recovered from galvanization ash and its application as antibacterial agent. The results show that the n-ZnO prepared with the concentration of acid of 1.9 M at 7 h leaching time producing the n-ZnO with highest purity (84.6 %) and percent yield (87.20 %). The antibacterial assessment shows that this n-ZnO inhibited the growth of bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae, highlighting the potential of the galvanization ash as the sustainable source of zinc to produce n-ZnO with the antibacterial properties.
