Abstract

A novel wavelength filter composed of two reciprocal multimode interference (MMI) structures is proposed in this paper. Its geometrical pattern is similar to a Mach-Zehnder interferometer comprising a 1 x 2 MMI power divider and a reciprocal 2 x 1 MMI power combiner. Due to narrow bandwidth, this type of filter is suitable for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems. The optical characteristics of the novel filter have been simulated by beam propagation method with the Runge-Kutta algorithm (RKBPM).
