Abstract

ABSTRACT Performance of wavelength division multiplexing ( WDM ) optical communication system using a F-P demodulator is analyzed. The power penalty expression resulting from U) Iinewidth, channelspacing, performance of F-P demodulator and crosstalk are proposed. 1. INTRODUCTION Wavelength division multiplexing ( WDM ) system is a practical system solution for miningthe vast handwidth offered by the optical fibers. It may prove to be an attractive networking technology in future communication networks and long-haul optical communication systems. Inthis paper, we analyze performance of WDM system using a F-P demultiplexer, and propose thepower penalty expressions resulting from U) linewidth, channel spacing, performance of F-Pdemultiplexer and crosstalk. 2. WDM SYSTEM PERFORMANCE A typical MxN channel WDM/FDM optical communication system consists of fixed or tunablewavelength LD (such as DFB-LD, etc.), two optical couplers ( Mxl and lxN ), single mode fiber, optical amplifiers, demultiplexers (demodulators) such as fixed or tunable frequency F-P filters,LD drivers, optical receivers, and other support units as shown in Fig.1.
