Abstract

Capsule endoscopy and single and double balloons enteroscopy are new techniques developed over the past few years and enabling the exploration of the quasitotality of the small bowel. In Crohn’s disease, capsule endoscopy provides superior diagnosis yield for small bowel study, up to 60% differential performance between the two techniques. Capsule endoscopy seems to have a better yield compared to computerized enterography enteroclysis although it is close to magnetic resonance enteroclysis. The diagnostic yield of capsule endoscopy is considered to be higher in the case of a known Crohn’s disease but this result is pending confirmation. Single-balloon and double-balloon enteroscopy are of tremendous importance in this context, playing a complementary role to capsule endoscopy, though a much more invasive technique.
