Abstract

This paper deals with the development of magnetostrictive thin films in which a magnetic instability of the Spin Reorientation Transition (SRT) type could be artificially induced by taking advantage of the nanostructured character of the films. This instability is used in order to achieve a great amplification of the susceptibility to the driving field, in order to reduce the size of the elements of control. Moreover, the giant magnetoelastic non-linearities induced in the vicinity of the SRT enabled the development of new non-linear excitation methods of resonant actuators, such as the “subharmonic” excitation and the bistable behaviour. Applications of these properties for the magnetostrictive microactuators are discussed.
