Abstract

Application of optical inspection and metrology technique plays a vital role in maintaining quality control of aircraft components. In this paper, some applications of optical metrology in aircraft components inspection are presented, such as geometric parameter extraction for ensuring the appropriately shaped component meets certain mechanical properties, surface defect measurement for making decision on part replacement or repair, parametric modeling for reconstruction accurate geometric constraints based solid model, repair verification, rapid manufacturing, geometry comparison, Geometric Dimension and Tolerance, part or tool set-up. Subsequently, some key optical metrology techniques are analyzed, including measurement planning, data Processing, point cloud virtual slicing, geometric projection processing, and segmentation and feature detection. There are two typical development needs for optical metrology application and its techniques. One is that most of the research works are mainly focusing on some special application without cross synergy. The other is that optical metrology techniques are still short of intelligence, especially for some complex applications.
