AbstractIn the light of rapid urbanisation, manufacturing processes in China's Pearl River Delta are undergoing extensive change. This is one of the regions where the collaborative research project Automated Landscapes has been exploring how automation affects the built environment. Among several international partners involved in the initiative is the Research and Development department at Rotterdam's Het Nieuwe Instituut, headed by Marina Otero Verzier. Here she charts how the area's industries are being rearticulated in line with shifting relationships between humans and machines, and how this is proving a double‐edged sword for the evolution of the city.
