Abstract

Born in 1943, Satō Makoto is one of the most important dramatists writing in Japanese today. He has received both the Kishida Prize for Playwriting and the Kinokuniya Drama Prize, the most coveted awards a Japanese dramatist can receive. He is a central figure in “68/71,” an active theatre ensemble for whom he writes his plays, and he is known as one of the most resourceful directors in Japan, having staged brilliant productions of works ranging from O’Neill’s Hairy Ape to Mozart’s Magic Flute.
