Abstract

ONE NEED NOT go back to the High Crosses of Ireland, to those of Monasterboice and Clonmacnois, to find the simplest or the most effective representation in sculpture of the birth of Our Lord. Storm-beaten though these wonderful works have been since the X century, the Nativity which certain panels depict is still readable. But in sculptures as in paintings of the Nativity it is not necessarily the earliest which are the best. It is rather a question of the temperament of the artist, modified, but not unduly, by the stylistic exigencies of his epoch.
