Abstract
The characteristics of constitutional mica hydroxyls and, especially, their distribution between directions close to the c* axis or to the ab plane seem to be important for the transformation of micas into vermiculite. It is suggested that studies of this transformation should take account of the water and fluorine contents and of the detailed hydroxyl structure. Moreover some of these data are relevant of the composition and the organisation of octahedral cations.
