Abstract

In the «Parc Ornithologique du Marquenterre» young avocets leave their nest 24 hours after the hatching of the first young of the brood. This is much earlier than usually reported by other observers (72 hours). This early dispersal is probably due to the high density of nests in the park (36 avocet nests on a 450 m² islet, and 2 nests of Black-headed gulls) leading to strong competition for food and space.
