Abstract

Background and aims. Notch receptors are implicated in proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis processes and the HES1 (Hairy/Enhancer of Split) gene is a major downstream target in the Notch pathway. Hes1 is a basic helix–loop–helix (bHLH) type of transcriptional repressor that suppresses expression of downstream target genes including p57kip2. Since we previously found that both Notch3 and Notch1 were aberrantly upregulated in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), in this study we aimed at investigating the role of Hes1 in the regulation of CDKN1C/p57 in HCC and we sought to determine the role of p57 in well-characterized human HCC cell lines.
