Abstract

ABSTRACT A taxonomic revision of the Neotropical genus Cryptogenius is provided. Based on literature data and the examination of 33 specimens, including the name-bearing types of two of the three available species-group names involved, we conclude that Cryptogenius comprises two species: C. miersianus Westwood, 1842, from the Atlantic Forest of Brazil and Argentina, and Cryptogenius westwoodi sp. nov., from the Amazon and possibly Panama and Costa Rica. Cryptogenius fryi Arrow, 1909 is here considered a junior subjective synonym of C. miersianus. The lectotype of C. miersianus is designated. Updated information on the geographical distribution of both species is presented. http://www.zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:3B6B81FD-2EF4-4734-A004-84535BF12F97
