Abstract

Abstract In East Asian seas, many overlapping claims or areas of unresolved boundaries encompass basins with good petroleum potential. They include the Tsushima Basin (Japan/South Korea), the Korea Bay (China/North Korea), and those in the Yellow (China/South Korea) and East China seas (China/Japan). In Northeast Asia, where state relations are deeply divided, such maritime issues or their resolution could take on much wider political import. The political context of the disputes is described and various solutions including joint development are elaborated for the disputes between China and Japan, and China and South Korea.
