Abstract

This chapter focuses on the seas in Northeast Asia, that is, the East China Sea and the Yellow Sea. It discusses some of the recent developments in this region, and looks into the 1974 Joint Development Agreement between Korea and Japan. The chapter explains why nothing much had been heard about this important agreement since its adoption. It discusses the reasons why this agreement has remained in a “dormant” state for a long time, and analyzes the recent tension between the two countries surrounding the agreement. The chapter then investigates the 2008 Sino-Japanese Consensus on the East China Sea, and its implications for maritime delimitation in East Asia. Finally, the chapter discusses the question of oil and gas development in the Yellow Sea. After discussing the different positions of the littoral States, the chapter looks at the recent problems between Korea and China. Keywords:1974 Joint Development Agreement; 2008 Sino-Japanese Consensus; East China Sea; Japan; Korea; maritime delimitation; Northeast Asia; Yellow Sea
