Abstract
This chapter discusses domestic developments in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK-North Korea) in 2012. A major task for ideology was to integrate the newly emerging cult around the late Kim Jong II into the existing admiration of Kim II Sung. The main task of the Party conference was the continued formalisation of Kim Jong Un's succession. The Korean Workers' Party (KWP) statutes were amended. The management of succession as it was started in late December 2011 was a major ideological challenge for North Korea in 2012. The official name of the leader-based ideology of the country was renamed from Kimilsungism to Kimilsungism-Kimjongilsim. The power shortages in North Korea are one of the main structural problems of the economy. North Korean participation in the London Olympics and in the Paralympics, the latter another first for the country, was hugely successful and was celebrated accordingly in the media. Keywords: Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK); Kim Jong II; Kim Jong Un; Kimilsungism-Kimjongilsim; Korean Workers' Party (KWP); London Olympics; Paralympics
