Abstract

This article proposes a principle of theoretical reflection on the European trend to regulate international migration using the sole criterion of migrant vulnerability and the perverse consequences that such a guideline generates in migrants’ experiences. In this regard, the dramatic increase in recent years in the numbers of vulnerable migrants is offset by State authorities using extremely selective systems of credibility assessment leading to arbitrary decisions on which migrants qualify as vulnerable and are, therefore, eligible for protective status. The impact of such a system is analysed using as a concrete example the treatment and evaluation of unaccompanied migrants children in France.
