Abstract
Twisted nematic liquid crystal cell operating in parallel polarizers mode is studied. Without compensation, such a cell has low contrast because of light leakage in dark (no voltage) state. Compensation layer, consisting of two superimposed retarder films, is offered to decrease light leakage in dark state and improve the contrast ratio. Simulation and measured data are used to prove the concept. Optimal compensation film parameters are computed.
