Abstract

We interrogated mitochondrial respiratory function and content in skeletal muscle biopsies of healthy adults 30-72 years old with and without uncomplicated type 1 diabetes (T1D). Participants (12/9 women/men) with type 1 diabetes (48±11 years old), without overt complications, were matched to participants without diabetes (control) (49±12 years old). Participants underwent a vastus lateralis biopsy to assess mitochondrial respiratory function, mitochondrial content and cristae density. Mitochondria area density was 27% lower in those with T1D versus controls.
