Abstract

We define a simple, purely local mode model vibrational Hamiltonian which gives rise to an apparent normal mode spectrum under conditions resembling a symmetric stretch Franck–Condon transition. The model clearly distinguishes the question of the intrinsic separability of the Hamiltonian from the nature of the initial conditions, or ’’pluck’’, implied by the transition moment.
