Abstract
This chapter presents frameworks for the understanding of nontraditional students in higher education, reviews the scholarly literature, discusses national data on nontraditional students, and identifies themes drawn from both the data and the scholarly literature. It sets the stage for the argument that follows in Chapter 2 and offers evidence for the significance of nontraditional students in higher education as well as their condition as students.
