Abstract
This article examines the economic rights and liabilities arising out of cohabitation by nonmarital partners and the validity of agreements between them with reference to such rights and liabilities. The important California case of Marvin v. Marvin is the focal point for discussion, but decisions from other states also are examined and compared with Marvin. Larger social issues are also raised including the problem of whether or not the California decision creates a special status of concubinage even though "common-law marriages" were abolished in that state.
