Abstract

In our recent works on nonlinear modulation of transverse waves propagating in an infinite micropolar elastic medium, it was shown that the slowly varying complex amplitudes of the transverse (displacement or microrotation) waves are governed by two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations. In the present paper we investigate the modulational instability of the plane wave solutions of these coupled evolution equations. The results are particularized for magnesium crystals, and instability regions in terms of wavenumber are given for two special cases.
