Abstract

The equivalent load concept is used in the analysis of large deflection (in the von Karman sense) of polar orthotropic annular plates in which the nonlinear terms of lateral displacement are considered as additional sets of loads acting on the plate. The solution of a von Karman type orthotropic plate is thus reduced to that of an equivalent plate undergoing small displacement. Solutions for plates with simply supported and clamped outer edges and free inner boundaries are obtained and found to be in good agreement with the available solutions. Results are presented to show the effect of orthotropy on lateral displacement and stresses. The numerical technique used in this study offers an efficient means of obtaining solutions to nonlinear plate problems.
