Abstract

XRD studies and dielectric measurements of BaTiO 3 single crystals in applied electrostatic fields up to 5.5 10 7 V/m have been conducted. From the observed unit-cell parameter variation as a function of the applied field E, the E -dependence of the piezoelectric coefficient d 33 has been evaluated. In the applied field range studied, the piezoelectric coefficient and dielectric permittivity have been found to change by a factor of 2. The observed nonlinear behavior is to a good approximation described by an expression which relates the dielectric characteristics of BaTiO 3 crystals to the electromechanical ones.
