Abstract
The behaviour of an unseeded Argon plasma at low pressure and high temperature as a medium of a disk-shaped MHD generator is described as resulting from basic equations. The electron temperature elevation and nonequilibrium ionization predicted for one-dimensional and stationary flow is compared with experimental results obtained from an experiment where local determination of the quantities is provided by electrostatic probes, spectroscopies, microwaves and piezo-electric crystals. The stability condition with respect to ionization instabilities is calculated in cases of no Saha equilibrium. The reduction of the Hall electric field due to inhomogeneity of the medium is studied experimentally.
