Abstract

How Common is Self-Injury? A review of 53 studies between 2005-2011 found an 18% lifetime prevalence for Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI).1 This prevalence rate is similar to that for deliberate selfharm (DSH) (16%), which includes self-harm with and without suicidal intent. The diagnosis of NSSI has been aided by its inclusion in the recent DSM-5 conditions for further study.2 A summary of the suggested DSM-5 criteria is listed in Table 1.
