Abstract
The non-linear beam-beam forces in storage rings can excite the coupling resonance 2 Q v – 2 Q h = m between vertical and radial betatron oscillations, giving rise to an increase in the smaller emittance. It is shown that the magnitude and the sign of the tune difference between vertical and horizontal motion are of particular importance for electron-positron storage rings. Criteria for avoiding this effect are established and the predictions of the theory are compared with some recent experimental results.
