Abstract

We present a model for the lattice dynamics of an intermediate-valent impurity where the degree of freedom of its electronic shell has monopolar fluctuations with an effective mass and damping. Explicit consideration of this additional degree of freedom accounts for the experimentally observed gap-mode in Sm 1− x R x ( R = Y, La, Pr, Gd, Tb, Dy, Tm) in contrast to previous models which assign this mode to the isotopic defect of ion R.
