Abstract
The mode of reference of the indexical terms I and you involves a pragmatic strategy, which can be described by the concepts of locuteur (vs. énonciateur) (adresser vs. utterer) and allocutaire (vs. destinataire) (addressee vs. utteree), and an operation nominating an individual to each of these roles. This concept of nomination accounts for the textual function of proper names used as terms of address. Proper names and 1st–2nd person pronouns are both dependent on a pragmatic principle of nomination; this impairs the linguistic importance of the discussion about the replacement of I and you by proper names.
