Abstract
SUNDAY is the fifth World No-Tobacco Day. The sponsoring World Health Organization says this year's theme is "Tobacco-free Workplaces." The World Health Organization is an autonomous unit within the United Nations system with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Hiroshi Nakajima, MD, PhD, the organization's director-general who is committed to major international reductions in tobacco use, has made recent appearances in the United States including at the John Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health's 75th anniversary program in Baltimore, Md, late last month. He says that the World Health Organization already is appealing to public officials and "to the civic sense of individuals" to halt the use of tobacco. Now, he says, "on May 31, we're turning to workers and employers." So, apparently, is at least one tobacco company.
